New University structure outlined

The University Court has approved proposals to change the academic structure of the University into four colleges.

In the new structure the seven faculties of Arts and Social Sciences, Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, Education and Social Work, Engineering and Physical Sciences, Law and Accountancy, Life Sciences and Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing will be replaced by four colleges.

The four new colleges will be:

  • The College of Art and Design, Architecture, Engineering and Physical Sciences
  • The College of Arts and Social Sciences
  • The College of Life Sciences, and
  • The College of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing

Each college will be led by a vice-principal. These will be permanent posts filled through open competition over the coming months, inviting both external and internal applicants.

Each college will comprise a series of schools giving clear definition and authority to the professional and academic disciplines in the University and encouraging greater collaboration in the general arts, sciences and visual disciplines. Each school will be led by its own dean.

A breakdown of the new colleges and the schools that will make up the colleges is provided on these pages.

University Principal Sir Alan Langlands said, "The new academic management will ensure that Dundee builds on its recent success in a rapidly changing and competitive environment."

"The schools will give clearer definition and authority to the professional disciplines and enable further progress in the general arts and sciences and visual disciplines."

A project team led by Sir Alan has commenced work on reorganising the academic management to be implemented from August 1 this year.

The new structure will be implemented without loss of employment and without demotion of grades for those staff whole role or responsibilities will be affected by the changes.

In devolving and strengthening professional administrative support to the colleges, each will have its own chief administrative officer - a college secretary - and a small cohort of devolved staff.
