College go one up in memorial match

Italy v Australia was not the only big football match being played on June 26 this year. In Dundee, pride was at stake as the University of Dundee and Dundee College faced up to each other for the Neil Glen Memorial Shield.

Staff football teams from the two institutions switched off the World Cup for the night to play in the third annual football match between the two. At one win each in previous encounters, the champions of this game would take the lead in the series.

The University fought hard in a close encounter but came off the worst in a 2-1 defeat. Maurice Hill of the Institute of Sport and Exercise was named TVi-sponsored man of the match.

The competition was first held in 2004 as a memorial to the late Mr Glen, a University of Dundee graduate and former member of staff and local city councillor, who died in 2004.

Sean Donaldson, floor supervisor at Bonar Hall, is credited with organising the event played on Riverside playing fields.
