Professor Marion McMurdo from the Division of Ageing and Health has been appointed to the newly created Scottish Physical Activity and Health Council. The purpose of the Council is to provide leadership and expert advice to the Scottish Executive on the health impact of physical inactivity and measures to reduce that impact. It will also offer leadership on physical activity and health policies and strategies in Scotland. Marion will be contributing expert advice specifically about physical activity and exercise in later life.

conference
The British Society for Dental Research (BSDR) conference will be hosted by the University from April 4-7. The organising committee is being chaired by Professor Pete Mossey. Professor Graham Ogden, Dr Jan Clarkson and Professor Nigel Pitts will be among the speakers.

The Cancer Research UK Race for Life event will take place in Dundee on 19 June. For more details and to enter visit: www.raceforlife.org

The Consul General of China was guest of honour at a reception for the University's Chinese students, organised by the Student Advisory Service. Mrs Guo Guifang was visiting the city for the first time. Another event for international students saw Vietnamese dancers, French musicians and singers, a Chinese duet and modern Kurdish dancers taking part in an evening of multi-cultural entertainment for Dundee, Abertay and St Andrews universities.

sport
Applications are now available for the children's Easter programme at the Institute of Sport & Exercise. The programme will run between 4 and 15 April. The courses are suitable for children between 3 and 16 years old, and include Junior Sports, NRG Max and Street Dance. For more information email: c.a.wilson@dundee ac.uk, tel: 344121.

award
Dr Fadia Daibes, a graduate of the International Water Law Research Institute, has received a prize from the Edberg Foundation in Sweden for her work with water related issues in Palestine and the Middle East. Fadia's work examines the environmental, social and legal implications of access to limited water resources.

Fadia started her PhD in 2001 and graduated last year. While based in Palestine for most of her studies, she made regular trips to Dundee.

roadshows
A series of roadshows will take place during the week commencing 25 April to inform staff about alternative forms of transport for getting to and from campus, and new green travel initiatives. The roadshows will take place in the Tower, DJCAD and the Fulton Building. For more information contact travel@dundee.ac.uk
