Brenda Gillies has been promoted to the position of Head of the Department of Social Work. She joined the Department in December 1994 and became a senior lecturer in October 1995 when she was appointed Director of Community Care Studies.

Students and senior scientists from the Wellcome Trust Biocentre collected £13,241 at Tesco stores throughout Tayside, for Diabetes research within the new Centre for Interdisciplinary Research. 20% of this sum was donated by Tesco, making a total of £15,889. A £25,000 donation has also been made to the CIR by local charitable trust, The Mathew Trust.

Celebrated photographer Rosie Donovan has been awarded an honorary fellowship from the University, in recognition of her contribution to the wider appreciation of the role of rural GPs. The book accompanying her work was co-authored by Professor John Bain who recently retired from Tayside Centre for General Practice.

Professor David Balfour has been appointed Chairman of the European Board of the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco - an international society dedicated to the study of tobacco addiction. He will also be one of three theme plenary lecturers at the Society's main annual meeting in Scottscale, Arizona this month. The meeting attracts around 1,000 US and worldwide delegates and is one of the principal international meetings on nicotine and tobacco research in the world.

Professor Brian Lipworth of the University's Asthma and Allergy Research Group has been awarded an honorary fellowship by the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, for his "Outstanding contributions to Research". The college awards just one or two honorary fellowships to international researchers each year.

Alexander Russell has left his position as Dean of the Faculty of Law and Accountancy to take up the post of Head of the Accounting and Finance Division at Glasgow Caledonian Business School, and to a Professorship.

experience
George Kirkcaldy and Craig Meach have recently completed work placements at the School of Life Sciences. The placements were organised by HELM - a Dundee-based charity that helps young adults with learning disabilities to gain experience in the workplace. Since the placements are on a voluntary basis and provide a useful service, the School made a donation of £100 to HELM. For more details about HELM contact Ron Grace on 01382 224464.

CD
A CD of 10 tracks has been created by Christina Costello in the Department of Applied Computing to raise funds for a new cyber café planned for the Queen Mother Research Centre (QMRC). laboratories
New Wellcome Trust Laboratories were recently opened by Dr Jacqui Wood MBE and Dr Pat McPherson OBE, Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the Ninewells Cancer Campaign. The new labs house "state of the art" scientific equipment costing £3.5 million.

nurses
Research nurses from the Medical School met last month to establish a communications network and identify their training needs for the future. The School's PhD students also met for an open day on postgraduate study with an introduction from Professor Mike Coughtrie and lab visits in the School.
