appointments
Dr Christine Hellier, from the Department of Accountancy & Business Finance, has been appointed as Director of Research at the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Scotland.

Professor Charles McKean has been elected an honorary fellow of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society, appointed a member of the Scottish Committee of the Heritage Lottery Fund and also appointed to the Historic Environment Advisory Council for Scotland.

Sue Roff has been appointed as Scottish Lay Member of the newly established Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board (PMETB).

workshops
120 pupils at schools in Dundee, Angus and Fife have taken part in advanced Higher workshops held by Dr Tony Tooke and Dr David Keeble from the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences.

disability
The SDT, who improve provisions for disabled students, have launched a new web site www.sdt.ac.uk with information and events for all staff in HE Institutions.

FELT
The Forum for Enhancing Learning and Teaching (FELT) held a one-day event for University of Dundee staff. The event, which was held at the Baxter Conference Suite in the Tower Building, was organised for staff at the Universities of Dundee, St Andrews and Abertay. Increasingly, students are expected to develop core transferable skills in addition to academic skills and subject knowledge during their Higher education and this event addressed the topic of student assessment for employability.

retirements
Alexander Ness has retired from the post of Chief Technician in the Department of Dental Surgery which he took up eight years ago. He has worked for the University since 1967.

Dorothy Morrison has retired from the Unit of Oral Surgery & Medicine which she joined in 1991.

Ann Bell has been with the University since 1991 and is leaving the Research Finance Office where she was section Manager since 1996.

award
First year student Kathy Vickers won the annual prize from the Dundee Association of Women Graduates (DAWG) for the most outstanding female on the University access course.

science
The Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science Awards (JSPS) enables visits from pre and post-doctoral research with leading research groups at Japanese Universities and Institutions. conservation
Professor Colin Reid, Professor of Environmental Law, was joint academic co-ordinator for a workshop on Nature Conservation and Legal Protection that was recently held in Malaga. Organised by the British Council, the British Embassy and the regional government of Andalucia, it involved over 50 delegates from throughout Spain and the UK.Discussion topics included means of ensuring legal protection for biodiversity and the implementation of EC conservation laws within devolved structures of government.

recognition
Marketing and Events Officer David Cunningham was recently voted one of Scotland’s top 30 people under 30 years of age in marketing by the industry’s magazine The Drum. David is leaving the University after eight years here - as a student, DUSA President and then staff member in the Principal’s Office and External Relations. He is leaving to set up his own events management company, Trigger Events.

golf
The University golf team once again beat the Royal and Ancient (R & A) Golf Club of St Andrews in a recent competition at the Old Course, St Andrews. Overall the University won 4 matches to 2. Eight of the 12 members of the University golf team are on the R & A bursary award scheme which provides teaching and financial support to help golfers who demonstrate particular potential.
