The Cold War and Scotland

Alan Dobson of the Politics Department has been invited to take part in an international research project entitled "Lives and Consequences", which will examine the regional and local impact of the Cold War.

Yale University’s International Security Studies and the Woodrow Wilson Centre’s Cold War International History Project are running the project. They have invited sixteen scholars to take part from around the world and Professor Dobson is working on the impact on Scotland of the Holy Loch US nuclear submarine facility.

The organisers have provided Alan with funds to enable him to engage Dr Charlie Whitham of the War Studies Department King’s College London to act as a research assistant and work at the Public Records Office in London. Alan is covering the Scottish records in Edinburgh. Together they presented their findings at a conference at Yale in late April. The conference papers will later be published as an edited collection by Stanford University Press as part of the Woodrow Wilson Cold War International History Project’s series on new Cold War history.
