Obituary

Irene Kay, of the teaching resources print unit, died in June after a long illness.

Irene joined DJCAD as a secretary in 1965, having worked previously for Watson and Philip. She was soon promoted to secretary to the design school, headed then by Myer Lacome. By the mid 1970s Irene had expanded her skills into design and print and became technical assistant in the school of architecture, working alongside chief technician, Tom Anderson. In 1989 she moved to the DJCAD print unit where she helped thousands of students through the traumas of their degree show. Irene was an ideal interface to the students - she had a great zest for living and remained young at heart all her life.

Irene was an intrepid traveller, visiting Israel and Palestine and latterly to Dubai, where daughter Hilary and son in-law Mark are settled. At home Irene worked with the Girl Guides, becoming commissioner for Fife and later crafts adviser for Fife. In later years, she became heavily involved in her local church in Carnoustie.

First taken ill during 2001, Irene coped admirably throughout her illness, and even returned to work for a period in early 2002. She remained positive during her illness and was supported by her parents, her husband Dave, Hilary and brother Brian, our colleague here at the University. Her funeral reflected her life - typical of Irene, she had asked that no mourning clothes should be worn so that her life could be celebrated rather than her death mourned.

Irene is missed by everyone in the teaching resources unit and by staff and students from DJCAD and the wider university. Our thoughts and best wishes go to her family.
