Dundee's top sporting year

Principal Sir Alan Langlands and Lady Elizabeth Langlands presented the University's annual blues and colours awards to the top sporting students in a year which has seen Dundee jump 70 places up the British Universities Sports Association league, clinch the British University hurling championships and the Scottish triathlon championship for the first time.

A total of 60 awards were presented ranging from archery to Gaelic football and sailing. The most coveted awards - sportsman and sportswoman of the year were presented to Neil McCombe from the Rugby Club and Louise Hartley from the ski and snowboard club.

Neil has been a member of the Irish under 21 national team even though he is only 18 years old. His international appearances in the under 21 six nations championship has been accompanied with rave reviews from the national and international press. He has been one of the best players for the Dundee University Rugby Team this year.

Louise represented the University of Dundee at the BUSA British University dry-slope ski and snowboard championships this year in Edinburgh. In the slalom event, she took gold ahead of skiers who won silver and bronze for Britain in the World Student Winter Games in Italy. In the Giant Slalom event, she also claimed the gold ahead of over 100 athletes from all over Britain. Louise also picked up the Alistair Sankey Memorial trophy for the best first year athlete.

Full Blues

Ross Stewart - Full Blue

Ross has been a member of the Scottish Universities team for two years running. He was also a member of the British Universities team in 2002 and the Scottish under-18 national team. He is also a member of the Arbroath division 1 national league team.

Gemma McIntosh-Full Blue/Merit

Gemma was the bronze medal winner in the BUSA regional qualifiers and finished 13th in Britain. She has been the only Dundee University student ever to qualify for the BUSA finals. She has also been the club captain for two years. Along with her club exec, she has managed to treble participation for her club.

Mark Houston - Full Blue

Mark has won everything there is to win in British and Scottish Universities Amateur Boxing. He won the gold medal in all three competitions he participated. These were the Scottish, the British and the British and Irish Championships. He has also been the Club President this year and along with the coaching expertise of Brian and Graham Healy and the Club exec been responsible for all the boxing club successes.

Craig Douglas - Full Blue

Craig has been a member of the Scottish Universities team for two consecutive years. He was a member of the Scottish junior team. He is also a member of the Dundee division 1 national league team.

SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR - Neil McCombe - Rugby Club

Neil has been a member of the Irish under 21 national team even though he is only 18 years old. His international appearances in the under 21 six nations championship has been accompanied with the most positive compliments from the National and International press. He has been one of the most positive players for the Dundee University Rugby Team this year. He is also a member of the Dundee High School Rugby 1stXV.

SPORTSWOMAN OF THE YEAR & ALISTAIR SANKEY MEMORIAL For the best first year athlete - Louise Hartley Ski & Snowboard Club

Louise represented Dundee University at the BUSA British University Dry-slope Ski and Snowboard Championships this year in Edinburgh. In the slalom event, Louise took Gold a head of skiers who won silver and bronze for Britain in the World Student Winter Games in Italy. In the Giant Slalom event, Louise also claimed the Gold ahead of over 100 athletes from all over Britain. Louise has been an inspiration to the rest of the club. Her two Gold medals this year are testament to her dedication and skill as a skier and student at the University of Dundee.

JAMES BOYLE SHIELD - Christopher Black For dedication to Sport - Swimming and Waterpolo Club

Chris has played water polo since the age of eleven, going from strength to strength as the years went on. Before University, he represented his school, local district and national teams, and this successive record continued throughout his university career. He has been a permanent fixture of the University team, and has missed only two competitive matches over his seven years at University. In addition to this, he has represented the Scottish Universities throughout his whole University carrier. Administratively, Chris has had an active role in the University, local, district and national water polo committees and had an imperative role in the design of the flying start Water polo Introduction days. He was also the Scottish Junior manager for one year and continues to promote the sport at his part-time job as a lifeguard and at national introductory days.

A. ALASDAIR LONIE MEMORIAL - Andrew Paterson - For dedication to club - Rucksack Club

Andy has been one of the most dedicated and active captains this year. He has been a member of the safety committee and he has organised a successful first aid course. The Club under his captaincy has proved to be one of the largest and most active clubs this year and credit for that has to be given to Andy. Rucksack club have this year one of the most well organised clubs of the Sports Union. Andy is also a medical student in his fourth year and his medical expertise has proved vital in order to keep the club heath and safety regulations up to date with the Scottish Mountaineering Association. Andy has clearly been an asset for the Club and the Sports Union and his effort and dedication to his club this year has been recognised within the student community.

STEWART CAMPBELL TROPHY - Alasdair George Granville Dickinson - For the best sporting performance Outside the University Sport Rugby

Alasdair has been the second International rugby athlete at the university. He has started most of the Scottish under 21 six nation's championship matches and he is a member of the Dundee High School Rugby team. He will also take part in the under 21-world cup. He is in his first year of the Scottish Institute of Sport rugby programme and in addition to his under 21 selections has played in the Edinburgh Pro team back up squad.

Scholars Scholar Louise Porter

Louise won the bronze medal at the National Scottish seniors, combined under 63kg and under 70kg. She was 2nd at the Scottish universities open weight category. She was also second at the British Universities under 63kg. She won the bronze National Belgian qualifying event, 5th Nationals in Belgium (-63kg).

Addi Shamash Bursars Bursar

She is a member of the Scottish senior ladies squad. She has won two medals this year in both competitions she competed this year. She was also a member of the last years Scottish Universities team.
