Neville on Concrete
by Adam Neville
aic international ISBN 0-87031-104-2

Adam Neville, who was the second Principal of the University of Dundee (1978-1987) has just published a new book - his ninth. The title, befitting a "concrete man", is 'Neville on Concrete'.

The new book contains an examination of issues in concrete practice, and a compilation of 42 papers written by Adam Neville in recent years, together with additional material. The topics covered have for most part arisen from consulting and expert witness work which he has been doing since leaving the University. In those years, he also published the "fourth and final" edition of his treatise 'Properties of Concrete' as well as the fourth and fifth editions of 'Structural analysis - a unified classical and matrix approach' written with Amin Ghali.

'Neville on Concrete' is published by the American Concrete Institute (ACI) which launched the book at its Annual Convention in Vancouver with a book signing by the author on 1 April 2003; what's in a date?

Abernethy School, 1872 - 2002: A Commemorative History,
by Frank A. Zwolinski
Culross: ISBN 1 873891 72 5

Following the success of his previous book: 'Abernethy: A Reflective Social Study From Old Photographs and Postcards' Culross, 2001, Frank Zwoliski was invited to record the history of Abernethy School before its closure and transfer to new premises in 2002.

The history of education at Abernethy School since 1872 reflects clearly the development and evolution of the widely respected 'Scottish Tradition' in terms of expansion and development, educational administration and political influence and positive intervention.

At the heart of the development of the 'Scottish Tradition' in education, the main thrust, primarily through numerous Education Acts, has been a continuous striving towards every child's right to free education, a better quality of life for children, a greater quality of educational opportunity, and a recognition of their rights and needs as human beings.

Frank Zwolinski is a graduate of the University of Dundee. Copies available from Abernethy Museum, Abernethy Primary School and the AK Bell Library Shop, Perth priced £5.

Situated in an exceptional site on the River Tay, the Old Mill at Stanley, Perthshire is probably the finest surviving example of an Arkwright cotton mill anywhere in the world. The recent conservation of Stanley mills by Historic Scotland and the Phoenix Trust, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, is a timely recognition of the international significance of Stanley mills and village.

This book is the product of some thirty years research by the author and traces the history of the mills and village at Stanley and their links with historically important figures such as Richard Arkwright, David Dale and Robert Owen.

The book also explores hitherto little-researched local themes like the Perthshire Clearances and the history of radical politics in Perth, as well as the creation of an industrial community at Stanley and the recruitment and training of the workforce. However, cotton was a global industry and the book examines Stanley's links with the cotton industry in the West of Scotland and the North of England, with the Dundee jute industry, and with overseas markets in places as diverse as India, North and South America, South Africa and Australia.

Anthony Cooke is Senior Lecturer in Continuing Education.
