The first evening concert of the New Year takes place in the Chaplaincy Centre on Thursday 29 January. Athenaeum Brass will be performing a wide selection of music, from composers such as Handel and Bizet right up to the present day with a Mini Overture by Lutoslawski.

Athenaeum Brass was formed in 1985, and has since developed a reputation for being one of the finest and most versatile brass ensembles in Britain. The members of the group are drawn from professional players based in Glasgow, all of whom play regularly with major orchestras and ensembles in Scotland and elsewhere. Athenaeum Brass has given music club recitals all over Scotland and has undertaken many engagements for the Council of Music in Hospitals. The ensemble has been featured on numerous radio and television broadcasts, including the BBC’s Songs of Praise and has appeared at the Edinburgh International Festival.

Rehearsals for the series of March performances resume in the new term and it is not too late to join the various music society groups. Following previous successes with Mendelssohn and Schubert, this term the University Orchestra will be rehearsing Schumann's 2nd Symphony while the University Choir will be working on highlights from Handel's last oratorio Jephtha.

The lunchtime concert series will resume on the 23rd January in the Chaplaincy Centre and the season will feature the usual variety of performers and pieces: OPSOC will be previewing their upcoming show "Return to the Forbidden Planet", the "Hunt" Quartet by Mozart will be performed by the Laird Quartet and a Vivaldi Concerto for two violins will be played by the University String Ensemble.

Travelling by Tuba has broadcast regularly on BBC Radio and Television and for many of the independent networks. They have recorded two compact discs and had a series of arrangements published. This outstanding success has led to collaboration with the world famous company Boosey and Hawkes.
