Displaying interest

One of the University's flagship postgraduate programmes recently kicked off its third year in style.

At this year's "Foundation in Displays" module, which heralded the start of the programme's academic year, a public talk, "Digital Cinema, the Opportunities and the Challenges" was presented by Dr David Monk, Chairman and MD of Texas Instruments (TI) UK, to an enthusiastic audience of over 100. Dr Monk also presented a more detailed technical talk to the new intake of students. Other invited speakers during the week long course included Norm Bardsley, chairman of the US displays consortium, Mark Fihn, president of US based VeritaVis, Ian Miller, lead technologist with Samsung in San Jose, and Peter Green, senior scientist with Philips. The academic contingent consisted of senior representatives from all the partner universities.

Course co-ordinator David Rodley explained, "There is currently nothing quite like DisplayMasters anywhere in the world. This partly explains the levels of overseas interest in the programme, and why we have managed to establish such strong links with industry, who recognise the value and quality of the programme. This year we have already been approached by agencies in the US, Singapore, China, and Germany to provide external training, and by three leading publishers keen to distil the academic elements of the course into book form."

DisplayMasters student numbers are increasing year on year as the course's reputation grows. This year new entrants from countries as far flung as India, Hong Kong, Mauritius, Bangladesh and China have arrived in Dundee to start the 2003-04 programme.
