Energy police

The energy challenge is coming to your department in the form of a odd looking man - Joules Waster. Joules will be visiting departments on the city centre campus on Thursday 24 October switching on equipment and hoping that staff will report him to the energy police who are holding an energy awareness day.

Staff from estates and buildings will be asking everyone to switch off their PC monitor at lunchtime to save the University a targetted £80,000. The team will be demonstrating in the tower foyer how much energy can be saved by switching off monitors for hourly breaks by hooking a PC up to an energy meter. The University pays £1.8 million in energy bills every year but energy manager Derek Mitchell estimates that if staff remember to switch off their monitors at lunchtime or when they leave their PC for more than an hour, energy consumption would dip and save not only cash but contribute to conserving our environment.

There will also be a 'power bike' in the foyer demonstrating how much pedal power it takes to make a kilowatt of electricity. For those able to quote the energy password from the estates website there will be the chance to win prizes including music vouchers and book tokens.
