TICR update

The campaign to raise funds for the Institute for Cardiovascular Research has enojoyed a packed calendar of events over the summer months. The launch of a new information leaflet promised to raise TICR's profile, while there were celebrations after the campaign reached a major milestone on the fundraising ladder.

In June, millionaire businesswoman and TICR chairman Ann Gloag was at the City Chambers to present the new TICR information leaflet to Lord Provost John Letford.

The leaflet contains pictures of the medical staff involved in TICR and a listing of all the equipment needed for the Institute. Each piece of equipment is listed with a price so donors can select the equipment they would like to fund. Presenting the leaflet, Ann said, "Scotland is top of the European league in heart disease. Together we can change that by supporting the TICR appeal."

Pulses were racing at news in August that the campaign had received donations with a combined total of £1/2 million in the space of week.

A massive £400,000 grant from the London-based Wolfson Foundation and a generous donation of £100,000 from Dundee's Leng Trust amounted to nearly half of what had already been raised during the campaign's first 18 months. The funds brought TICR significantly closer to reaching its target of £3.5 million to build a centre of excellence at Ninewells Hospital, the sole purpose of which is to fight Britain's number one killer - cardiovascular disease. A total of just over £1 million has now been raised.

The annual TICR walk took place in September, when more than 200 people turned out to support the campaign by completing five and eight-mile walks around beautiful Perthshire. Around £7000 was raised, with Dr Faisel Khan, a senior lecturer in the department of medicine, handing in a whopping £1000. Chronic arthritis sufferer Irene Taylor, 65, and her sister Janet, 70, set the best example by completing the testing eight-mile route. Irene, who wanted to raise funds to thank coronary care staff at Ninewells for caring for her late husband was presented with a £100 prize for her sterling effort.

Bill Anderson, chairman of the TICR fundraising committee said, "It was one of the best events we've had and the weather held up for us. We can only thank all those who supported us and the volunteers who helped make it a memorable weekend."
