Smoking prohibited

The University smoking policy has been revised and now prohibits smoking in all University buildings and directly outside entrances to buildings. This policy is now in effect and is enforceable by heads of departments.

Smoking was previously allowed in personal offices by arrangement and the areas outside buildings were common gathering places for smokers. Staff and students wishing to smoke on campus will have to stand a reasonable distance from buildings to ensure that tobacco smoke does not drift through doors and windows. There will be no provision for smoking inside University property.

To promote awareness of the new policy and to designate no smoking areas outside, signs can be obtained from estates and buildings.

The policy was revised to comply with medical advice that non-smokers who are exposed to tobacco smoke have an increased risk of contracting lung cancer.

The change in policy was recommended by the safety committee convened by the Principal and was approved by Court in December. The committee consulted widely and ruled out designated smoking areas in and outside buildings.
