Primitive streak

A fashion collection chronicling the first 1000 hours of human embryonic development and designed with the help of a developmental biologist now based at the University opens at Dundee Contemporary Arts on April 24.

Professor Kate Storey, who has been researching at the Wellcome Trust Biocentre since October 2000, worked with her internationally-acclaimed fashion designer sister to create Primitive Streak - 27 garments which chart the first 10 key events of human life.

Acclaimed for fusing art with science, the exhibition was brought into being in 1997 and has so far been viewed by more than 2 million people around the world.

It has been brought to Dundee by Science Year Scotland, who co-ordinated a lecture for young people hosted by Kate and Helen at DCA. Its arrival in the city has been made possible through partnership with Pfizer, Science Year, the Scottish Executive Education Department and the generous support of Sir Philip Cohen at the University.

Primitive Streak runs until 4 May at VRC.

Found in space
An insight into how children view the future. School children aged 7 to 11 have been working with electronic imaging students Alec Ohnstad and Lynn Granger from Duncan of Jordanstone's school of television and imaging to develop their ideas of how fashion, comedy and sound will evolve. Ambient sounds, lighting effects and image projection transform the gallery space into a futuristic environment.
