Presenting policy to the Italians

DUSA received the warmest of welcomes in Italy last week at the second international conference on substance use and nightlife issues.

Chris Bustin, deputy president of the students' association was accompanied by Kathy McGillivray, information and support services manager to present the association's recent work on sensible drinking.

The bi-annual event, which allows representatives of entertainment and nightlife organisations from across the globe to meet to share and discuss issues of mutual concern, took place in the north Italian town of Rimini. DUSAs presentation, 'Sensible drinking?' highlighted the advances DUSA has made in recent times on this subject, including recognition in Parliament, and the Department of Health.

Chris said: "The conference couldn't have gone better. Following the presentation of our code of practice on sensible drinking we had about 100 inquiries about our work from organisations from all over the world. The delegates from the Netherlands seemed particularly interested in our work."

Professor Umberto Nizzoli, chair of the conference said after Chris' speech: "It is gratifying for a me as professor in a University to see a students' association doing something so positive for its students health. I wish we had similar organisations in Italy that could undertake the work you are doing - it is very important that young people who leave home have a structure of support that can be accessed easily if the need arises."
