Conferences

The University of Dundee is hosting a diverse range of conferences dealing with topics from old age to anatomy over the coming months - many of them drawn to the city by academics based at the University.

The events commonly attract world-class experts in a multitude of fields -building the reputation of the institution - and Dundee and Angus - as a major conference destination.

The major event is "Challenges of Concrete Construction" which will see more than 600 delegates converge on Dundee between 5 and 11 September and is expected to bring around £1/4 million into the city.

Hosted by the University's Concrete Technology Unit, the congress is a unique collaboration between the unit and the Institution of Civil Engineers UK, the American Concrete Institute and the Japanese Society of Civil Engineers.

More than 30 concrete-related professional bodies are supporting the congress, which takes place in the Bonar Hall, while several industrial bodies are acting as sponsors to the event.

The congress will feature a series of seminars and conferences. Professor Ravindra Dhir, director of the Concrete Technology Unit, said, "Dundee was selected as the venue for the congress as the University is renowned for its world class Concrete Technology Unit. This is a major event for the University and for the city itself."

The summer months are the busiest of the University's conference schedule and while students are on vacation, the University residences offer accommodation to visiting delegates. Several large conferences are scheduled for summer 2002.

Ninewells Hospital and Medical School is the venue for "Technology Meets Surgery International". Running for three days between July 15 and 17, the purpose of the conference is to bring together leading surgeons, clinicians and technologists from around the world to develop greater understanding between the groups and foster international relations.

The conference will be attended by around 60 internationally recognized delegates, including the University's own keyhole surgery pioneer Sir Alfred Cuschieri. The event has the support of various organizations including the British Council, the Medical Engineering Research Institute and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.

The Department of Engineering is to host the 7th Geotechnical Engineers Conference at West Park from July 17-19. More than 50 delegates from across Britain will attend the conference which is organised by the British Geotechnical Association.

Other summer conferences include June's "Scottish Governance: Devolution, Federalism or Independence" hosted by the Department of Politics and a major international conference on Rhibozyme Chemistry in August.

Later this year, the British Geriatrics Society's Scottish branch will hold its autumn scientific meeting at the West Park Conference Centre. Around 100 delegates will attend, mainly hospital consultants specializing in the Medicine of Old Age. The meeting, in November, will have sessions on innovative research on health ageing, and how to provide better quality care for older people.

Looking to the future, bookings for 2003 are already coming in at the University's conference venues.

The University's MSc in Educational Psychology course is to host the Educational Psychologists in Training (EPiT) conference in July 2003. This is the national annual get together for EPiTs. Attendance is compulsory for the 13 courses from England, Wales and N Ireland. The University hopes to have representatives from Dublin and Strathclyde as well as our own 24 EPiTs who will be helping to organise the event.

In August 2003, around 200 researchers from Europe and the US will attend the 12th European Conference on Eye Movements. This prestigious bi-annual event is hosted by an international team of reading researchers, based at the University of Dundee's Psychology Department. It provides an opportunity to see the latest technology and to find out how eye movements provide insights in a variety of domains, ranging from attention control, reading and eye-hand coordination to advertising and driving safety.
