Music Update

photo of Mikado ticket Another busy year for music in the University begins with a performance of Gilbert and Sullivan's Mikado on October 20 at 7.30 p.m. in the Bonar Hall. As an unusual twist, we are going to produce and rehearse it in only 24 hours - rehearsals start at 7pm on Friday and the show opens at 7.30pm on Saturday evening. The Bank of Scotland has agreed to sponsor us and all cash raised will go towards supporting the various musical activities at the University. All tickets are £5 and the glamorous souvenir programmes are a snip at only £2.

Our evening concert series opens with a programme of music for trumpet and piano/organ presented by Anthony Thomson and Graham Eccles. As well as featuring some well-known pieces such as the Prelude to Charpentier's Te Deum and Jeremiah Clarke's trumpet voluntary they will also play more contemporary works such as Peter Maxwell Davies' Sonatina for solo trumpet.

The free Friday lunchtime concert series begins with the ever-popular barbershop quartet: Four in a Bar. All concerts begin at 1.20pm and finish by 1.50pm. Throughout the season we are hosting a variety of performers covering tuba, voice, guitar, the University Big Band and Choirs.

As well as all the various concerts, all the various groups and societies will be up and running again. The various Music Society groups meet in 5 Airlie Place on weekday evenings as they prepare for their concerts at the end of term. As always, a wide variety of music is being rehearsed: Mozart, Jazz, Mendelssohn, John Williams and Arthur Sullivan. Staff and students are always welcome to join. If you are interested you can find further information about the music society's activities on www.dusa.dundee.ac.uk/musicsociety

Opsoc will be moving into their new room which is downstairs at 5 Airlie Place as they begin rehearsals for this year's production of Oklahoma! If you are interested in taking part or helping out in any way they would be delighted to see you. www.dusa.dunde.ac.uk./opsoc

If you are looking for a restful way to spend a lunchtime, you are always welcome to come along to one of the music groups that take place on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday at 1 p.m. The Bach Consort meets on Tuesday, string ensemble on Wednesday and the staff choir on a Thursday. Come along and join us - you don't have to be accomplished!
