Graduation Showcase

Plans to develop graduation week into a showcase of events for the university and the city are under discussion across the campus and Dundee.

Initial discussions have centred on the possibility of providing a high profile week for the university that houses numerous events from open-air concerts and guided walks of the campus to open lectures and even street markets in the city centre.

There are also ideas being considered to create a tented village at the Riverside sports complex in order to house most of these events. Many sites on and around the campus are also being considered as a central location. The development of alumni relations is thought to be an area where the showcase week could prove to be beneficial and discussions are also ongoing in this area.

These ideas follow the success of the University's first ever graduation ceremony in London which was held for design graduates this summer. Writing to thank the university one parent commented that "the setting was perfect, the champagne and canapes went down a treat and the small numbers meant it had a very personal feel. I would like you to know that I, as a parent, am very appreciative of all the effort that must have been involved." Meanwhile another parent wrote to thank the university for running this event saying that his daughter had been offered a job with Carlton Cards as a result of her being at the exhibition. Indeed she, and they, greatly appreciated the effort that went in to the "all round enjoyment" that was experienced by all.

While the London ceremony is now set to become a regular feature in the university calendar, assuming there continues to be a clash of dates between graduation and the exhibition, it seems that events here in Dundee will also be developed to ensure the week is a memorable one for all involved.

With early discussions already taking place with the city council and many members of the university community it is hoped that we will see significant changes as early as next year's graduation.
