Caroline Hamilton, a fourth year student in the School of Fine Art has won the Royal Scottish Academy's Carnegie travelling scholarship for her "Painting no.37" at the Scottish show of graduating students in Edinburgh.

Professor Alan Robb, Head of the School of Fine Art said: "This is the most competitive of awards in student painting. Most abstract painting tends to be predictable but Caroline's isn't. Her work takes risks. It is intuitive and spontaneous and it certainly stands out from other students' work."

Caroline: "I see painting as a way of making sense of the world around me. There is more to painting than merely looking nice. There is a need to communicate. As Gerard Richter said: "By conveying a thing through the medium of language, you change it."

Caroline intends to use her £200 prize money to assist her move to Paris where she hopes to set up a studio.
