Wider Access Partnership To Extend Opportunity

The University of Dundee Wider Access Study Centre has obtained research funding from The Sutton Trust to enhance equality of access to higher education. The Trust, established by the entrepreneur Peter Lampl, aims to provide opportunities for young people from unprivileged backgrounds.

WASC Director, Dr John Blicharski, warmly welcomed the new partnership: "The Sutton Trust is a highly respected organisation and we are proud that our department has been selected for this unique work."

The University and The Sutton Trust have created three mini projects which will initially involve WASC staff in intensive research. It is hoped that their work will contribute to education policy at the highest level. The projects aim to boost progression to higher education from selected local schools and to discover the employment outcomes of former Access Summer School students to illuminate concerns about potential employer discrimination.

WASC will also investigate the use of Scholastic Aptitude Tests as a measure of previously untapped academic ability.
